Online Learning

This summer online education has become the topic of discussion.

I am currently participating in an online women’s Bible study with WELS women from around the world. It is a great way to study and grow in God’s Word with sisters of the same faith and in my native language.  Five other ladies representing our WELS missions in Mexico, Bolivia, and Antigua are also enrolled in this Bible study.

In the past, I have witnessed the behind-the-scenes development and teaching of LATTE online courses, and now I am experiencing the work involved on the other side as a student.

Nate is also taking an online course this summer, on how to teach to an online course.  In the past, he has participated in online course development classes, but found it difficult to continue while he was teaching students in areas that do not offer Internet access.

Online education is a great way to study when the classroom resources aren’t available locally.

New Features on LATTE Blog

We wanted to share a brief update regarding the new information tools on the LATTE blog. There is a gadget in the left hand column marked “Learn More”. Under this heading you will find additional links to learn more about LATTE and what we do.

The first item is “View Photo Gallery” which takes you to a Flickr gallery of almost 200 photos. The next item takes you to “Check Out Recent Updates” posted on the work of LATTE. Then there is the opportunity to click on “Meet The Students” to find interviews and updates of past and current LATTE students. We are planning to post more interviews in the near future.

For those who like to cook, you can Try Authentic Recipes” originating from the different countries we serve. We welcome any comments, recommendations, or requests about the recipes. The following link provides teachers or group leaders to “Utilize Classroom Resources for activities in school or at special events.

The remaining two items put you in touch with WELS World Missions. Click on Request a Mission Speaker” to schedule a mission speaker on LATTE at your congregation, school, ladies group, LWMS rally, or other special event. (If you are unable to open the pages on WELS Connect, please contact Peg Thiele directly at 414.256.3293 or email her at peg.thiele@wels.net.) Through the Mission Information Center (MIC), you can “Order a Mission Kit on LATTE. We are currently updating the materials in all the LATTE kits this summer. In the near future, keep an eye out for the new “Timeline” link that will provide the history of LATTE.

As many requested, there is a current map along with ministry details under the tab near the top of the blog page called “Where We Serve”. The goal of the LATTE blog is to inform you of the past, present, and future work the LATTE missionaries are doing throughout Latin America as well as staying connected to you. Thank you for your continued support!

Japan Update

From another Japanese Pastor

“Dear brothers and freinds in Christ,

Praise be to God!

First of all, on behalf of the pastors and members in the LECC (Lutheran Evangelical Christian Church) I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your Christian sympathy upon the earthquake and tsunami which have brought devastation to Japan. Thank you also for your sincere concern and prayers for my country and its citizens and especially for the members of the LECC.

We have six congregations in the central part of Japan, Though some parts are broken, all the chapels and parsonages are all right, still stand at this stage. Our church members are safe and well. None of the members were injured except for [a member]. She lived in Kesennuma-City when the earthquake shook Japan and one third of the city have devastated by the tsunami. We can not contact with her after the tsunami and do not know if she and her family are all right. Please keep them in your prayers!

Your messages and prayers really encougared us. Thank you very much again for your Christian love.

Cordially yours in Christ.”

If you would like to support our relief efforts in Japan, go to directly to www.wels.net/relief or watch WELS Life Line-Japan sponsored by Christian Aid and Relief.

UPDATE – Thursday, March 17

From Missionary: “We rejoice this evening that we heard that [the member] and her husband are safe. They escaped the tsunami by car and are taking refuge at a city hall in either Kesennuma or a nearby city.” All praise and thanks to God!

From Japanese Pastor:  “Today Shion (his son) was only a student at his cramming school. people doesn’t want let kids go outside. but I receive emails from many mothers that they want to bring child to Bible class and want them to listen to God’s Word. I decide to have kids Bible class. and a boy came to church by himself. make me so happy.”

Pray for Japan

This past Friday, Japan experienced an 8.9 magnitude earthquake followed by a tsunami with a 30 foot tidal wave. Recently, a nuclear plant had an explosion and another earthquake is predicted to hit. Below are updates from dear friends in Japan.

From a fellow missionary serving in Japan

March 10 at 11:21 pm – “Very scary earthquake.”

March ll at 1:57 am – “We’re okay. I was home (actually, over at church with Kaneko-san and Tanaka-san) and the children were at school – were evacuated to the field. The quake was verystrong and went on for a long time. I went out during one of the aftershocks and the car was actually rolling back and forth. Now we’re all safely home – still feeling aftershocks, though, kind of like being on a rolling ship.”

March ll at 7:54 am – “Thank you for your thoughts and prayers, everyone. We are very thankful for God’s protection today. Two of our boys are feeling some anxiety this evening, but they have fallen asleep now.:

March ll at 1:18 pm – “So thankful for everyone’s thoughts and prayers. We’re continuing to have some pretty strong aftershocks – I haven’t slept much, but the children are managing to sleep through. [My husband] will be home Tuesday.”

March 12 at pm – “We had a large tremor just as I was tucking the children into bed last night, but we all slept through any nighttime activity. The children and I read Psalm 46 last night, and I keep returning to those words. We are anxious for [my husband's] return on Tuesday. He’s in …. today and flies to Hong Kong late tonight.”

March 13 at 1:18 pm – “A little update – school is cancelled for tomorrow, although the teachers are going in. The rolling blackouts are starting. We’ll be without power from 6:20 until 9:20 in the morning and again from 4:50 until 7:50 in the evening. The grocery store shelves were pretty depleted today. The kind manager apologized to me, but was thankful he had enough milk (he knows me as a purchaser of many liters of milk.)”

From a Japanese Lutheran pastor

March 11 at 5:02 am – “Please pray for people here for safe night. No light, water, electrich system, no lights on crossing, no phone. Mito city is just stock. But my family is fine.and some church member near by are ok.”

March 12 at 8:33 am – “Up date from Mito. Now electric, water, gas are back to personage. but many house not. some house totally broken, many house was broken a part and walls, many places of roads cave in. some bridge was broken, most of stores have no water and food and gasoline. Still many people escape to school or public places. I can not contact with some church member yet especially who lives Hitachi and Hitachinaka or more north.”

March 12 at 8:37 am - “Another crisis is a radiation burn from nuclear station. We hope “No rain” after a while. Church building it self seems Ok so far. roads are very very busy, it took 1 and half hour to get Shion to Kindergarten. Or to visit a church member took 1 hour usually it takes just 5 min. I spend most of time of today to find and keep water.”

March 12 at 8:41 am – “We still have intermittently earthquake every 30 min. (last night was almost every 10 min)
May God bless our church service tomorrow. God mercy on people in suffer. God’s grace on people who don’t know their Savior .Thank you for your messages and encouragements and prayers!! Please keep it in your prayer!”

March 13 at 10:20 am -  “Update from Mito on Sunday. We had the Sunday service, a few people came. Most of stores have gave out food and waters. and gave out gasoline!! but life line is mostly back to Mito area. We asked Tokyo church to help some relief goods. because Tokyo and Saitama is working. Mr. Kakuchi and family bought many things for us and brought to them to Shimodate. I could see Mr.Kakuchi and received them. We will face to power cut for 4 hours purposely in Kanto area to save a electric energy from tomorrow. I am not sure it is good or bad idea. any way I need to go to gas station tomorrow. I can not go to south to buy food anymore because of lack of gas. I heard that another earth quick will come in 3 days, which is as big as the last Friday one. Please pray for people who still have no lifeline, and no damage any more.”

From a Japanese former English student

March 13 at 3:54 am - “I am now in Taipei,Taiwan from March 7 for a change of air and an escape from hay fever. As you know, Japan has suffered incredible catastrophic disaster by earthquake and Tunami. Especially, the influence by Tunami is a great loss. There is worse to tell. It is reported that a part of the atomic power plant exploded and radioactive material leaked to the atmosphere. I am not sure but it is said that more than 10,000 people were killed.  Fortunately, my family are safe. however, my wife told me that shabby house was shaken violently. After knowing such a catastrophic disaster, I could not enjoy my trip. I am going to return to Japan on March 17.”

From a Japanese friend from Ashikaga (currently living in USA)

March 11 at 6:54 pm - “I was able to talk to my family on the phone. They are well and they are very scared. Many many after shocks. I am praying for every one over there. AND thank you very much for all the prayer. I wish I were there to help people. Love you all!”

March 11 at 10:26 pm - “There are many many after shocks, said my brother. My brother is a hair dresser and he was able to open his business today. How lucky I am to hear that!! I feel sad… death toll is getting higher and higher… saw some small children’s names on the list…. I held my children very tight and promised that I will protect them no matter what.”

March 12 at 8:57 am -”Morning everyone. Things are well with my family. They have a house, things to eat, electricity and mostly their family. My fathe’s oldest brother lives in one of the most effected areas and we can’t get hold of him. My father believes that he will be fine. Again, thank you very much for thinking about us.”

March 12 at 4:45 pm -“Called my parents. They were still sleeping (sorry mom and dad for waking you up). While I was talking with them, they felt another earthquake again… and again…. They are hoping that it will stop, completely stop soon. It was very nice to hear their voices.”

March 13 at 10:45 am – “Ashikaga didn’t get much damages compare to northern part of Japan. They still fell after shocks often.”

Please keep the people of Japan in your prayers that they may come to know Jesus.

Psalm 46

God is our refuge and strength,
an ever-present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam
and the mountains quake with their surging.

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
the holy place where the Most High dwells.
God is within her, she will not fall;
God will help her at break of day.
Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall;
he lifts his voice, the earth melts.

The LORD Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Come and see the works of the LORD,
the desolations he has brought on the earth.
He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth;
he breaks the bow and shatters the spear,
he burns the shields with fire.
“Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.”

The LORD Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Miles Apart, Still Close to My Heart

I want to personally thank all of you for the birthday greetings-Facebook messages, emails, phone calls, and e-cards.  It is a wonderful blessing to hear from all of you around the world-Mexico, Ukraine, Japan, Norway, Canada, Dominican Republic, France, China, Malawi, Colombia, Hong Kong, and the USA.  It really makes me feel not-so-far away.

I also received a couple birthday cards via snail mail.  The amazing part is that they not only arrived in less than a month, but also with a $0.44 stamp. The current international postage rate to Leon, Mexico for a regular size letter is $0.79.

A special treat was an e-mail greeting “Tanjyo Bi Omedeto Gozaimasu” from a friend named Kei-san who lives in Japan. He attended our English classes in Oyama and stayed afterward to study the Bible with one of the missionaries. Kei-san has traveled the world studying English and continues to keep in touch.

He sent this picture of my teaching partner, Marcie (Tillema) Kieckhaefer, and me touring Coco Farms Winery in Ashikaga, Japan — 13 years ago.

I did have a wonderful birthday.  Nate surprised me with two bouquets of flowers-one of African daisies and the other of red roses.  The roses included a beaded necklace and a pair of earrings.

Christmas Series – Part 1 – Feliz Navidad

¡Feliz Navidad! Feliz Natal! Moni Wa Chikondwelero Cha Kristmasi!

Joyeux Noël! メリークリスマ! Merry Christmas!

During this joyous preparation for baby Jesus, our dear Savior’s birth; Nate and I are attending many activities to share the good news of Christ and his gift of salvation!  In the next few days, we will be posting a series focused on recent mission activities, personal experiences, and customs in Mexico.

In our first post of this series, we’d like to share our personal Christmas greeting:

Greetings of Peace, Love, and Joy in our Savior Jesus Christ!

For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6)

2010 was a year full of surprises. The first half of the year took us on teaching and Friendly Counselor trips to the Caribbean and Brazil on behalf of WELS World Missions and the Latin American Traveling Theological Educators (LATTE) team.  During that time, our WELS mission team in México relocated from Torreón to León due to security precautions.   In April, we found a house to rent in León, packed up belongings in Torreón, and moved to our new home.

We are spending the remainder of the year settling in as we learn our way around the city and help out with the new mission. León is a beautiful city full of community parks and activities.  It is centrally located near areas that have played a major role in the country’s history.  We have taken a few excursions to Guanajuato, San Miguel de Allende, and Guadalajara. León itself is known as the shoe and leather capital of México.

One of the highlights for México this year was celebrating its 200th anniversary of Independence and its 100th anniversary of their Revolution.  For our mission in León, we woke up one day to find “The Lutherans Arrived” on the front page of the newspaper featuring an article on our church.  All praise and thanks to God!

Currently, Nate is teaching two students full time at the seminary in León, with another student attending classes ‘live’ through Skype on the Internet. Nate is also teaching online courses to a student in Puerto Rico and another in Antigua.  He continues to serve as the WELS Friendly Counselor to our mission in Brazil and hopes to begin online classes with our student in Brazil who recently has Internet access.

Julia continues to adjust to the new role of “ama de casa” – housewife, but enjoys spending time meeting new friends in the neighborhood, visitors at the mission, and contacts in Zumba exercise classes.  She is also studying with a private Spanish tutor to work on her language fluency and understanding of the Mexican culture.

We enjoy hearing from you as at times we feel so far away. Share a comment on our blog, write an email, give us a phone call, or send us a note!

Have a blessed Christmas and 2011!

Nate & Julia
